LCHS Temporary Closure until Aug. 23, 2021

As members of the public safety community, we have an obligation to perform our sworn duties during disasters both natural and man-made. The animal shelter will be utilizing social distancing and will minimize contact as much as possible. To that end, the Lake City - Columbia County Animal Control and Humane Society will follow the following protocol until August 23rd to allows us to safely resume full functions.

High Priority/emergency calls: At this time, officers will continue to respond to emergency and high priority calls. This type of call includes law enforcement assistance, injured or sick stray animals, cruelty and neglect complaints, bite complaints and dangerous and aggressive dog complaints.

Non-emergency calls and activities: Officers will suspend low priority/non-emergency activity. This will include non-aggressive stray animal pick-up, leash law complaints, barking and nuisance complaints. Trapping at individual homes/businesses is suspended however trapping and transport of feral/community cats in public areas, open land, forests, etc. will continue as normal.

Shelter intake reduction: We are taking active measures to reduce nonessential shelter intake. We are suspending non-emergency owner surrender intake until further notice and encouraging owners who are ill to keep their pets at home whenever possible.

We are encouraging all owner surrenders to utilize internet programs such as Petco’s Rehome software. The link is: https://rehome.adoptapet.com/auth/login Probably one of the easier programs to use.

Note: Officers will make every effort NOT to enter the home of anyone known to have been exposed to the virus. Lake City-Columbia County Animal Control is attempting to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for our officers for cases involving Covid-19.

LCHS – Clinic: The clinic staff will be on-site from around 10 am to 3 pm each day that we are closing to do in-house surgeries since we are closed to the public and FTA appointments/surgeries. We are working to reschedule all those appointments as soon as possible. The clinic staff will call and reschedule FTA appointments.

The Humane Society Adoption Center: No adoptions or fosters until Aug. 23rd.

We understand this is a major inconvenience, but under present circumstances we are asking for your cooperation. We are hoping to be back to full operation as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
