Adopt. Don't Shop.

Four dogs. Three cats.  Every day.

Those are the average statistics for the number of animals the Lake City Humane Society receives on any given day.  When you adopt an animal, you are adopting one that was negligently left behind giving them a new chance at a healthy, happy life and are doing your part in uplifting our community.

How To Adopt

So you’re ready to adopt? Welcome to the wonderful world of owning a rescue pet! All you need to do is schedule your appointment and fill out your adoption application.  That’s it!  In the adoption application, we will ask if you have any specific animals in mind – perhaps you saw a smiling face on our Facebook page – or if you want to look at dogs/cats specifically.

On the day of your appointment, we’ll welcome you in the office and introduce you to the available pets of your choosing.  From there, feel free to spend time playing with and getting to know the available animals so you can find the one that fits your personality and requirements the best.  The adoption staff will be there to guide you and answer any questions you may have.

As a reminder, each adopted animal will have the following:

  • Spay/Neuter

  • Microchip

  • All age appropriate vaccines and preventatives

  • Heartworm test & first dose

Once you’ve chosen your furever friend, you are ready to fill out paperwork.  This is basic information so that we know where our – now your – friend is heading and can keep up with you to see how everything is going.  You’ll be signed up for our monthly newsletter and welcomed in to our humane society family.

Next Steps

Your new furever friend has gone through quite a lot of change since being introduced to our facility and now introduced into your home.  We like to reference the 3-3-3 rule to help new pet parents understand what their baby is going through.

3 days

  • They will feel scared, anxious, and uncomfortable.  They may not want to eat or drink much and will hide where they can.

3 Weeks

  • Your furever friend is beginning to feel comfortable and is learning your routine.  Their personality will be showing more and more each day and they may begin to test your patience by acting out.

3 Months

  • All comfortable, safe and cozy now!  This is when the magic happens – your furever friend will be building trust and bonding with their new family and is already ingrained in the routine and expectations.

Happy Endings

We wish you all of the love and fun times shared with your new furever friend.  As a humane society, we are always here to offer resources, schedule wellness visits to keep your fur baby in tip top shape and host a variety of events throughout the year for you to participate in with your adopted friend.  We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Thank you!
