We are happy to help!
When you come into the Lake City Humane Society looking to adopt a pet, you are encouraged to walk through our dog and cat areas to find a pet that you think fits your personality and lifestyle. If you’re not sure what type of animal will best fit you, just ask one of our friendly adoption staff to recommend one for you. We are happy to help!
If you decide that you want to adopt an animal, you will then need to complete a form and meet with one of our adoption staff. We are here to help you make sure that you and the pet you choose will make a good match.
In making a decision for an adoption it is always a good idea to bring the whole family and make the choice of a pet a family decision. If you already own a dog we encourage you to bring your other dog(s) to the shelter with you to allow them a chance to meet his or her new friend, and make sure that they get along. We have a great area designated for this.
Adoption applications may be completed in person, by phone, e-mail, or by fax. However, processing of applications is not complete until a personal interview of the adopter is done by one of our adoption counselors. The adopter must be present at the time the adoption is completed.
Lake City Humane Society, a private nonprofit organization, was formed in late 1964 to address animal welfare issues in our community. There was no animal shelter, and little attention was paid to the hundreds, if not thousands of animals that were picked up off the streets and killed if no one came to claim them. One city employee – the “dog catcher” was hired to catch and dispose of stray and unclaimed dogs in our area.
